Introduction:
Corona Secondary School, Agbara was established by Corona Schools’ Trust Council in January 1992. Corona Schools’ Trust Council, which currently operates seven schools in Lagos and Ogun State, is a not-for-profit organization that was incorporated in 1958. The school is a co-educational secondary boarding school situated in the serene and quiet environment of Agbara Estate in Ogun State, Nigeria. It is Africa’s first E-learning secondary school that has grown over the years, one of the only two schools commissioned as a partner school for German Language (Pasch-Schule of the Goethe Institut) in Nigeria and the first New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accredited school in Nigeria and second in West Africa. We are a British Council Partner School.
Our vision to producing well-rounded and proudly Nigerian young men and women equipped for continuous learning, personal mastery and leadership is evident in our blended curriculum enriched with global best practices as this provided us an opportunity to win the 2019 category of the International School Award. The award further improved our students’ cross-cultural understanding and community development through varieties of programmes that are targeted at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The approved entries for the 2024 Award by the International assessors were the outcomes of the committee’s brainstorming session after which it painstakingly supervised the successful completion of the various activities. Undoubtedly, our students’ active engagement throughout these programmes has equipped them with decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and imagination, leadership, collaboration and communication skills. Our students now conduct research towards solving multi-dimensional challenges confronting humanity. The community have benefitted through many sustainable poverty alleviation programmes as well as educational opportunities entirely provided by our students. Our supportive parents are proud of their children’s engagement as the school also adopts the feedback from the outcomes of these exercise to upgrade our rich curriculum.
This report outlines eight impactful initiatives carried out by Corona Secondary School, Agbara, Nigeria during the reaccreditation phase of the British Council International School Award (ISA) 2023/2024. These programmes were aimed at consistently promoting a genuinely international dimension of our school’s curriculum. The activities addressed a wide range of Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. These activities enabled our students to join their voices towards transforming our world with the varieties of programmes to end educational inequalities, poverty and environmental degradation etc. These activities not only encouraged collaboration, problem solving and creativity skills among our learners, they also equipped them with a comprehensive educational experience and practices dedicated to creating a more sustainable future for all.
